About The Balmoral

The landmark clock tower, a symbol of Edinburgh, marks the spot of the amazing hotel. A member of Rocco Forte Hotels, The Balmoral is not just like any other hotel, it is also a landmark.

Located at the heart of Edinburgh, guests of the hotel enjoy easy access to the city’s attractions such as Edinburgh’s Castle, Carlton Hill and Arthur’s seat.

The History

W. Hamilton Beattie and A.R. Scott won a competition to design The Balmoral – known then as The North British Station Hotel – and owned by the North British Railway Company. The hotel was opened on 15th October 1902. The hotel closed for a major refurbishment in 1988 and re-opened as The Balmoral in 1991. Sir Rocco Forte bought The Balmoral on 1st March 1997.

The Design

Envisioned by Olga Polizzi, the design embodies the Scottish landscape. It features green, blue and grey colour palette throughout the hotel, brining the outdoors in.

Afternoon tea at the Palm Court

The Balmoral’s award-winning afternoon tea is served at the Palm Court in a serene and calm atmosphere. An afternoon gives you time for a pause, and there’s no better place to experience it than The Balmoral.

Guests will be sitting under the green leaves of palm trees and a magnificent chandelier. Along with a lighted sparkling tree that is situated at the middle of the Palm Court.

Diners will enjoy a selection of loose-leaf teas, finger sandwiches and fresh pastries, served with an option of a glass of champagne.
